Marge sees the words EPA on the side of the helicopter and realizes that Grampa's prophecy has come true. Though Lisa states that they've cleaned up, Cargill throws back by exclaiming that someone did not get the message. As they finish their song they try to talk for a moment about the environment, which elevates the audience and prompts the audience to throw trash and boo at the band.
A nearby squirrel jumps into it and becomes severely mutated, with many eyes. Nearby, Bart and Flanders are hiking up a hill when they discover the squirrel who is immediately captured by the EPA. At the White House, the contained squirrel is brought before President Arnold Schwarzenegger by Russ Cargill, head of the EPA. He states that Springfield has become so polluted that the government must take drastic action and proposes five different solutions. The President picks plan 3 at random, choosing to not even read them, which leads to a giant glass dome being placed over Springfield. Cargill then tells the town that Springfield is now the most polluted city on the Earth and that the government has decided to contain it.

The combination of Homer Simpson, his new pet pig, and a leaky silo full of excrement triggers a disaster that threatens not just Springfield but the entire world. While it is easy to say the main culprit is Homersince he dumped the silo in the lake, he is not alone in what caused the modification to the town. That mixed with the incompetence of the political leaders, the impatience of a young environmentalist and the avoidable death of band all led to the dome dropping on the town.
On July 22, 2019, Groening stated that he had "no doubts" that The Walt Disney Company, which acquired 21st Century Fox early that year, would likely produce a sequel one day. In July 2021, Jean stated that discussions for the potential sequel had stalled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Further changes were made after the March 2007 preview screenings of the film in Portland, Oregon and Phoenix, Arizona. This included the deletion of Kang and Kodos heavily criticizing the film during the end credits. A lot of people at the screenings found the original film too coarse, and some of Homer's behavior too unkind, so several scenes were toned down to make him appear nicer.
